Program Description

The Practical Nursing program prepares students to take the National Examination for licensure for practical nursing. The program prepares graduates to give competent nursing care in a variety of medical environments. This is achieved through a selected number of academic and occupational courses providing a variety of techniques and materials necessary to assist the student in acquiring the needed knowledge and skills to administer quality care. A variety of clinical experiences are planned so that theory and practice are integrated under the guidance of the clinical instructor. Program graduates receive a Practical Nursing diploma and have the qualifications of an entry-level practical nurse.

Length of Program

A total of 95 hours is required for graduation. A full-time student could expect to complete the program in six quarters. Completion time for part-time students will depend upon course load taken.

Campus Location

The Practical Nursing Program is offered on the Coffee Campus each winter and summer quarter. Students are accepted on the Ben Hill-Irwin Campus each fall and spring quarter.

Practical nurses are professionals dedicated to providing the best total care to their patients, families, and communities. Varied employment opportunities are available in hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, physicians’ offices, industry, health departments, private patient care, home health agencies, and many other specialized facilities.

Personal Characteristics

To succeed in the Practical Nursing program and as a Licensed Practical Nurse, a person should enjoy providing care for patients, working with individuals of various cultures, being able to focus on tasks while in a busy environment, having the ability to multi-task, possessing a strong code of ethics, having the ability to make sound decisions, being able to follow oral and written instructions, possessing excellent technical skills needed for patient care, and being able to work well with others.

Entrance Requirements*

Required Age: 17 years of age or older
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Placement exam required.
Must be age 18 before licensure.
Required prior to clinicals:  physical exam (including TB testing); Hepatitis B. Vaccination; Drug Screening; Health Care Provider CPR and First Aid Certification

*Applicants should understand that a prior misdemeanor or felony conviction could prevent applicants from sitting for licensure exam.
*A criminal background check may be required for clinical participation in nursing home facilities.  The criminal background check must be completed prior to clinicals and payment for the background check is the responsibility of the student.
